Title: Influences of Solid Recognition Ability and Drawing Ability on Solid Drawing Abilities in Drafting Learning of Technology Education

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the influences of the ability to recognize solids, and the ability to draw them, in drafting learning of technology education at junior high school level. The investigation was conducted with 251 1st grade students by using the "Space Recognition Test" and "Drawing Test" (both Matsuura et.al 1998). The students also drew figures of solids by observing models.
The findings were as follows: l) The female students' ability to recognize the forms of solids significantly influenced their ability to draw them. This effect was seen when the perspective of the solid was changed. 2) The accuracy of the male students' graphic representations of shapes and spaces varied in accordance with their drawing ability.
These results suggest that promoting females' solid recognition ability and males' drawing ability are important for developing abilities of solid drawing, respectively.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the learners' cognition about learning activity and knowledge studied in technology education in junior high school. 219 undergraduates described their impressions of technology education, expressing pleasure and surprise at the ease of use of tools and ability to retain comprehension of the procedures. Their descriptions were analyzed for terminology, content and knowledge, collating a wide range of key themes about manufacturing, activity, study and learning. The generally positive impressions of the students and the correspondence analysis of their comments confirmed that technology education and its learning activities can be enjoyed and retained, thus providing an overall positive effect on students' learning strategies and attitudes.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to inquire into the analysis of junior high school students' thought content compared with undergraduates in the assembly process in manufacturing. "Temporal assembling", "Scribing ", "Making holes before nailing" and "Assembling parts into a work" were set as processes of assembly, and the students' descriptions of their thoughts collated during the procedures. Correspondence analysis was adapted to try structural analysis of thought content about each process. Results showed the thought content of the junior high school students to be more general and abstract than the undergaduates', thus suggesting that instruction at that level was necessary for achieving more technical and specific thought content during assembly.

Title: Development of Teaching Tools Converting Binary Number to Decimal and Hexadecimal Number Using a Peripheral Interface Controller

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to improve existing teaching tools for understanding binary and hexadecimal numbers for converting them from binary to decimal and hexadecimal form. One of the teaching tools in the past merely displayed the single figures of decimal number without explaining the considerably complex transformation process. The decoding IC for seven segments LED used at another teaching tool in the past is not manufactured now.
To solve these problems, we developed a new teaching tool, which display decimal numbers 0-15 and hexadecimal numbers 0-F, using the peripheral interface controller. We tested the educational effects of this new teaching method and the following results were obtained.
(1) Displaying numbers on the double figures of seven segments LED requires very little manipulation.
(2) When university and graduate students used the new teaching tool, comprehension was raised for understanding the correlation between the binary number and decimal number, and hexadecimal number respectively.
(3) To further simplify the process, we developed another teaching tool which displays numbers on a liquid crystal panel.

Abstract

The present paper describes the evaluation of a technology education curriculum for junior high school students to learn manufacturing and programming in controlling an autonomous mobile arm-equipped robot as teaching material. The purpose of the curriculum is to teach the concept of systems consisting of mechanical and electrical apparatus and a computer through the integration of manufacturing and programming. This paper reports results of evaluation for the curriculum carried out at a junior high school. ,It can be concluded that the curriculum proposed here satisfies the requirements to give students more incentives in learning the concept of systems.

Title: Application of Shape Memory Characteristics of Wood in Making Things Workshop

Abstract

Kumamoto Monozukuri Fair is a one-day off-school workshop to involve children in technology related activities from the early stages. It has been carried out in Kumamoto City annually on a regular basis since 2005. Staffs of the workshop are volunteers from Kumamoto University, local industrial sectors and education related organizations. They planed and prepared various suitable items for children to make, especially in the view of developing their liberal technological variety, and in corresponding to the distinct developmental needs of participants from kindergarten to elementary school. One unique element of making things activities was the application of shape memory characteristics of wood in order to stimulate children interest in modern technology by harnessing the hydrothermal characteristics of wood. The observation reveals that children showed great interest in such new wood technology and enjoying making things activities very much although it was a challenge for them to use various tools. It is also noteworthy that the workshop provided valuable off-campus training for technology education pre-service teachers acting as instructors there in collaboration with other staffs from local community. The positive feedback from university students in teacher training courses of technology education served as staffs in workshop proved that such activities are authentic learning to improve their capabilities not only in knowledge but also in skills of teaching. These valuable practical experiences would encourage them with enough confident in their future teaching career.

Title: A Study on Relationships between the Tip Thickness of Hand Plane and Surface Texture of Wood

Abstract

To clarify relationships between the tip thickness of hand plane and the surface texture of wood, we cut an air dried hinoki at the tip thicknesses of 22, 47, 96, 173μm by a exchangeable blade type hand plane. The specular glossiness at 85 degrees and the contact angles of water drops on the cut surface were measured. Each cut surface was analyzed by con focal laser scanning microscopy. The following results were obtained.
(1) The specular glossiness and the contact angles were increased with the decrease of the tip thickness. (2) Microscopy revealed cut surface cells at small tip thickness, and torn cells at large tip thickness. (3) Microscopy analysis showed the maximum height and the arithmetical mean deviation of primary profile increased in proportion to the tip thickness in early and late wood. The maximum height and the arithmetical mean deviation of primary profile were larger in the early wood than in the late wood. There was the significant correlation between the skew of the primary profile height amplitude curve and the specular glossiness, and contact angle of water drops, respectively.
