Abstract

The purpose of this study is to make clear the structure of students' consciousness of effectiveness of learning as formed by Information and Computers in technology classes. A scale was constructed from students' comments obtained in a previous open-ended survey (Moriyama etal 2006), and an investigation using this scale was conducted on 308 3rd grade junior high school students who can use computers and the internet in their homes. As a result, three factors that construct students' consciousness of effectiveness of learning were found as follows, effectiveness of practical utilization of information, effectiveness of scientific understanding of information, and effectiveness of information ethics in the Internet.
Also, the experiences of application of information media in other areas promoted the effectiveness in the current daily lives of both boys and girls. On the other hand, perspectives on future occupation promoted effectiveness in the future social lives of only boys.

 Abstract

It is important for people to learn through experience how much energy they consume on a daily basis, and how many watts of electricity are uses in daily by electric appliances. A teaching tool using self exciting type of generator is proposed and fabricated with which humans can generate electric power using the own energy. The measurement and display system for generated power is installed in the system. By using the set, people become consciously aware that making electric power is hard labor and that efforts to save energy are important.

Abstract

Recently, the decline in the math and science abilities of high school students has become a more and more serious issue. It is also confirmed in the Public Opinion Survey on Science and Technology (issued by the Cabinet Office, February 2004), that the younger generation including high school students, shows especially low interest in science and technology. One of the reasons is that students do not have many opportunities to utilize the math and sciences skills that they have gained this we developed a training program, using probability statistics of resolving problems in the industrial field (such as traffic flow problems), which can perform an engineering simulation and analysis for daily events. To calculate the analysis results, students need to use the program to generate an exponential distribution, and obtain the arrival time (Poisson arrival distribution) by integrating it. This time, this program was implemented as an experiential learning activity. As a result, it can be seen that this program is effective in raising students, desire to learn and interest in science and mathematics.

Title : Design and Implementation of a University Timetabling System for a Teacher-Training Course

Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of a university timetabling system for individual students who major in a teacher-training course. The system helps the students who are required to choose many optional lectures for acquiring multiple qualifications, such as teacher's license, by automatically generating the various timetables which meet the requirements of the students. Simulated Annealing (SA) is adopted for a timetabling algorithm. The algorithm, however, frequently fails to generate a completed timetable with a specific combination of the optional lectures under the assumed timetabling constraints. In this case, we continue the recombination of optional lectures and run the timetabling until the constraints are satisfied and a complete timetable is obtained. Thus, we propose a method that uses discriminant analysis to predict the result of the current timetabling for reducing the rate of incomplete timetabling and increasing the efficiency of timetabling performance. The coefficients of the discriminant function based on the statistical results of the preceding timetabling are used for the discriminant analysis. The implemented timetabling system consists of a database system and programming modules written in Visual Basic.
