SUS 304 and SUS 3 1 6 austenitic stainless steels are superior in corrosion resistance and recyclability and are used in various fields. However, easily hardened through work hardening, they are difficult-to-cut. In precision machining of such work hardened materials, the pressure and calorific values have to be made small. In slicing with a multi-wire saw, because it is free abrasive machining that uses extra-fine wire and slurry as the cutting tool, pressure and calorific value in processing are small, and damage given sliced surface is little.
In this study, we investigated the fundamental slicing characteristic of austenitic stainless steel by doing a slicing experiment with multi-wire saw. SUS 304 and SUS 316, which are typical austenitic stainless steels, were used as work materials. Additionally, carbon steel (S35C) and borosilicate glass (Pyrex) were used as comparative experiment materials. As a result of this study, it became clear that the machinability of austenitic stainless steel was inferior in comparison to borosilicate glass, but the sliced surface roughness and form accuracy were superior. Therefore with further studies application in precision machining can be expected.

Key words : multi-wire saw, austenitic stainless steel, carbon steel, borosilicate glass, slicing characteristic

Title: Formative Circumstances of Intention for Attainment Project in Making Things
Author: Akio UOZUMI

Aims of the government teaching guidelines are to instill in students a "zest for living" (IKIRUCHIKARA) and to foster in them self-educability. It has been shown in research on the fostering self-educability in technology education that intention for attainment project is a core factor and that its formation is crucial.
This study, after consideration to the elements of intention for attainment project in technology education, attempted to clarify the formative circumstances of student intention for attainment project based on student survey. Results gave insight into the formation of intention for attainment project. Making things learning of technology education in junior high school is effective in enhancing intention for attainment project, and elements are structured through enhancement.

Key words : technology education, self-educability, making things learning, intention for attainment, questionnaire

Title: Development and Evaluation of "Intelligent House" Interdisciplinary Teaching Material in Junior High School Technology Classes
Author: Shinnosuke MORI Torn YAMAMOTO

The theme of the "Intelligent House" was chosen was as a subject which holds the possibility for content development from technology education to other education fields. Students gradually managed to gain an understanding of its basic concepts and spontaneously engaged in group activity. Information regarding students' degree of knowledge of and interest in the teaching material was collected through questionnaires before and after lessons and was examined in connection to educational performance.
It was found that the teaching materials were effective not only in deepening students' understanding of, but also in advancing their interest in and appreciation of the relationships between information technology, housing and the living environment. It was also shown that due to student interest in housing construction, "Intelligent House" is applicable for technology and object manufacturing courses.

Key words : interdisciplinary teaching material, intelligent house, control and programming, object manufacturing

Title: An Analysis on Energy Conservation Education and its Practice at Technical High Schools
Author: Nobuhiro NAGAO Takenori OGAWA

This study is to clarify the present conditions and problems concerning energy-conservation education in textbooks for Geography and History Civics and Home Economics courses, with an eye for systematizing energy-conservation education at technical high schools. For the promotion of energy-conservation education at technical high schools, from the three educational viewpoints of (1) energy-conservation technical education, (2) social system education for energy-saving, and (3) lifestyle education for energy-conservation, content reform is suggested. An energy conservation learning plan was developed and put into practice in integrated learning classes. Results showed an improvement in energy conservation awareness, interest and appreciation.

Key words : Technical High Schools, Energy-Conservation Education, Normal Subjects, Integrated Learning

Title: An Examination of Educational Guidance in "Information and Computers " Through Analysis of Learner Awareness
Author: Chikahiko YATA Kunio UEDA

The purpose of the present paper is to examine educational guidance in information technology education based on the learner awareness of students attending a secondary educational institution. With 566 students in the first year of high school in Hiroshima prefecture as subjects, we investigated the aspect of 'interest' and 'self-evaluation' in terms of concerning knowledge, skills and appreciation in the content of "Information and Computers" courses, and aspect of degree of 'importance' in terms of possible effectiveness in later civil life. The results indicated that learners recognized the importance of the curriculum, however, a grasping of self-evaluation was generally low. The results suggest that interest and concern are low awareness to the 'Role of Information Media' 'Computer Use' and 'Measuring Control and Program' and strategies to take form practical learning activities are required. The study revealed a positive degree of interest in and appreciation for educational content in 'Basic Structure and Operation', 'Information Communication Networking' and 'Utilization of Multimedia' and a need for educational guidance to foster the fixation of knowledge and skills.

Key words : information technology education, information and computers, educational guidelines, learners' awareness

Title: The Effects of Production Activities in Industrial High School "Project Study" on the Formation of Students' Self-Concept
Author: Kazunori Shimada Jun Moriyama Masashi Matsuura

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of production activities in "Project Study" on students' self-concepts in industrial high school. Three hundred twenty-two students Industrial High School students responded in a survey of free statements concerning their impressions about "Project Study" as well as in a survey using the "Scale of Self-Concept". From the free statements 8 classification categories were drawn up. These categories include "acquisition of knowledge and skill", "awareness of the importance of effort and co-operation" and so on. Through quantification analysis (Type III) of the students' impressions the 2 axes of "Reflection on experience" and "Reflection on learning" were abstracted. Further, from the results of Type I quantification analysis, the effect of the areas of "Awareness of the importance of planning", "Awareness of the importance of production activities" and "Reflection on missteps" on promoting students' "Attitude toward self-discipline" in their self-concepts was recognized. These results suggest that in production activities of "Project Study" motivation towards achievement and self-regulation in technological activities plays an important role in forming self-concept in students' aims towards autonomy.
