Title: The Fostering of Self-Educability in Technology Education: The Effectiveness of Cultivation Study on Fostering Self
-Educability in Junior High School
Author: Akio UOZUMI

題目:技術科教育における自己教育力の育成に関する研究

著者:魚住明生

The new government teaching guidelines require the fostering of self-educability through practical and experiential study. Fostering self-educability has long been an important aspect of technology education, but there has also been an expectation that cultivation study can foster a different sort of self-educability from other object-making and production-style classes. In the revised guidelines, cultivation study has been made an elective course in junior high school technolo-gy education, and as a result, it is expected that fewer schools will offer it-which in turn will create a new set of issues in the fostering of self-educability in technology education.
This study examines the validity of cultivation study as a course to foster self-educability. Specifically, it analyzes arice cultivation in a bucket" class, a follow-up self-educability diagnostic test, and student reports on cultivation.
Results reveal that cultivation study is effective in fostering self-educability and that through cultivation study students acquire the fundamental expertise related to cultivation study necessary for fostering self-educability.

Key words: technology education, self-educability, cultivation study, lesson practice, new government teaching guide-lines

Title: Development of the Personal Computer Measurement Device Using the Audio-Signal for Educational Purposes

題目:音声信号を用いたパソコン測定装置の教材開発
著者:西 正明・北川正史・村松忠道

The use of automatic measuring devices can be effective in such fields as electricity in technology and home economic education. However, the devices are expensive, and advanced knowledge and experience arc often necessary to master their use. To overcome these problems, we developed the personal computer measurement device that was both inexpensive and easy to use. In this paper, we describe the measuring device: how it inputs the sensor signal to the audio terminal of the computer with a VF converter, how the computer performs a DA conversion and produces and displays a graph, etc. The device can be used to measure irregular signals not easily recognized by typical oscilloscopes, as well as signals that change slowly over a long period of time. The device was used in technology/home economic classes on illumination to measure the brightness and heat generation of incandescent and fluorescent lamps. It was confirmed that students could use the device effectively to ascertain correctly the features of incandescent and fluorescent lamps.

Key words : measurements with personal computers, audio signal, WAVE file, VF converter, DA converter

In this paper, a design procedure for an electric vehicle driven by a direct current series motor is proposed. First, speed is analyzed. Then, from this analysis, the theoretical formula for steady state speed Vs and the time constant r are derived. These speed and acceleration performances are two indexes for automotive performance. After two conditions were set -that steady state speed is maintained at minimum value Vmin or above, and that the time constant r is maintained at maximum value rmax or below -a formula was derived to determine the permissible ranges of the motor character parameter con and the gear ratio X. The selection method for a motor and the design procedure of the gear ratio can be derived from this result.

Title: A Study on the Characteristics of the Resistance due to the Blunt Aft End of a Body

Because the flow behind a blunt aft end includes complex phenomena, it is difficult to examine and analyze; consequently, characteristics of both the flow and the resistance caused by the flow have yet to be fully described. In order to clarify these characteristics, the authors of this paper selected for study ships with transom sterns as examples of bodies with blunt aft ends. Resistance caused by a transom stern consists of two components: that caused by forward-oriented breaking waves generated just behind the stem end and that caused by remaining following waves.
Characteristics of each component were investigated by methods developed by the authors, and the following were discovered: Resistance caused by forward-oriented breaking waves occupies the larger part of the resistance caused by the transom stern; the resistance coefficient caused by the remaining following waves hardly changes with an increase in ship size, whereas the resistance coefficient caused by the forward-oriented breaking waves clearly decreases with an increase in ship size.

Key words: blunt aft end, transom stern, remaining following waves, forward-oriented breaking waves, clarification of resistance characteristics, scale effect

Title: Productions of the Offset Crank Thermal Engine Using TiNi Shape Memory Alloy Springs as a Teaching Material

題目:形状記憶合金ばねを用いた教材用オフセットクランク式熱エンジンの製作
著者:松永泰弘・鈴木綾子・柳谷信樹

The authors' previous research has described the development of an engine car/ship using TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) wire and two pulleys for use as a teaching tool. In this paper, we describe the creation ofa new type of SMA engine: an offset crank engine with SMA springs. After rpm (revolutions per minute) for this new offset crank engine was measured, principles of rotation and factors affecting rotation were considered, and an engine producing a higher rpm measurement was produced.

Key words : shape memory alloy spring, offset crank engine, teaching material

Title: A Proposal for Using as a Teaching Tool a Multipurpose Remote Control System Employing Cell Phones
Author: Eiichi MIYAZAKI

題目:携帯電話を用いた多目的遠隔制御システム教材の提案
著者:宮崎英一

In this study, we designed the prototype of a system for controlling robot arms, oscilloscopes, etc., which are connected to control servers via the Internet, with personal computers or mobile devices used as control terminals. This system was installed into ordinary personal computers using the HTTP protocol, which is used for browsing WWW pages. Because the control servers output HTML tags only, the displays of the control terminals can be seen with common browsers. Thus, this system has high compatibility, allowing use of a variety of terminals, including cell phones, for control. In addition, the programs for controlling the devices connected to the servers are written in Visual Basic, so most devices can be used if they support this language, enabling the expansion that users in any particular environment may require. Furthermore, expensive equipment or special devices have proven unnecessary, as the primary purpose of this study has been simply to develop a system for technical education. Also, it is possible to use this system in a much broader range of classes than just engineering.

Key words: Internet, control, Visual Basic, CGI, cell phone, information

Figuring out the optimal layout design for greenhouses on junior high school campuses is a difficult task for teachers with little experience in doing so, and thus we tried to develop a training program for current teachers, one that employed simulated annealing. "Cultivation studies" are currently handled as part of technology and making things in the fields of junior high school industrial arts and home economics. Some degree of examination was performed with regard to methods of appropriately designing a layout on school premises of a glass greenhouse as required for actual cultivation accompanying these cultivation studies and marked the beginning of layout design for a school greenhouse.
With respect to the topic of the optimal layout design, improvement and development of base programs via C programming language were performed for rational layout design support that aided in simulated annealing (SA) , a heuristic algorithm that has garnered attention in recent years, along with preliminary layout design simulation to gain knowledge about development of programs for actual use.
Automated optimal layout design via computer was attempted for the greenhouse for actual cultivation on school premises. As a result, appropriate solutions falling within given constraints as well were obtained in the simulation. The possibility of practical use of an SA simulator for optimal layout design of facilities improved or developed on school premises was suggested.
